Er, excuse me. I’m the DAD. Hello-o-o?

The well being of dads-to-be is often forgotten in the excitement of expecting a new baby. It is the mums-to-be who get most of the support either through their midwives or by talking to their friends and family.

Its well know that men don’t talk about the issues that they have and so any concerns about having a baby and being a father can be sidelined or ignored altogether.

The GentleBirth course gives both the mums and dads-to-be an opportunity to sort out these concerns in a relaxed informal way, and because the course is held in small groups the men get a chance to have a chat (sport, cars, drinking?) and come to realise that these concerns are general to the other men in the group.

Issues such as:

  • How will I know if my wife is in labour?
  • When do I call the midwives?
  • What if we call them too soon?
  • What can I do to help my partner?
  • What happens during labour?
  • My wife wants a home birth but I am worried that something might go wrong
  • Will the car be big enough (especially for parents of twins)
  • Will I earn enough money?

A stress busting anxiety release session during the course will help remove anxieties and build confidence.

TO ALL DADS - HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR PARTNER

Make sure you eat a good diet. You will need just as much energy as the mum-to-be during the birth and afterwards.

Get a good night’s sleep

Q.

How can I do that when my partner takes up most of the bed and she’s tossing and turning or getting in and out of bed all night?

A.

Use the Rainbow Relaxation CD that comes with the GentleBirth course.

All the dads to be have said how much better they sleep and how much more energy they have when they use it (Although some of them take a bit of persuading at first!)

Talk to each other. Don’t assume you know what each other wants. Then make life easy for yourself and make a birth plan so that you don’t have to think about it.

GentleBirth will show you how to make a birth plan to get the best for you and your baby, and one that medical staff will read

Learn how to use the washing machine!! (Now just hang on a minute!!)

Finally, have fun, relax and enjoy

Things that dads say before the course:

I don’t think it’s for me.
You go. You’ll be better without me.
I don’t think I can be hypnotised so it won’t work
Nobody is turning me into a chicken
I’m too busy / I’ve got to work
Well if you really want me to, I’ll come with you

What they say after the course:

It was fascinating especially the bit where we learnt to anaesthetise parts of our body
I didn’t think I could relax, but now I know how good it is, I’m going to carry on doing it.
I’ve used some of the techniques in my work and it’s made such a difference
The relaxation has helped me prepare for running a marathon
I get a better night’s sleep now my partner is sleeping
