About Hypnosis

As its name suggests, HypnoBirthing™ is a birthing programme based on hypnosis. But what is hypnosis?

Well, there’s no mystery – it’s actually very simple. Hypnosis is “a focused state of awareness” . The natural state of hypnosis is called daydreaming so most of us are pretty good at it anyway.

How does it work?
Your subconscious mind is like a computer only much more complex. It is there for your protection and has control over all the bodily functions that need to work without you having to think about them, your heart, lungs liver, and kidneys etc.

You programme it every day with things that you learn. After a while when you have practiced a behaviour often enough it goes into your subconscious (your computer) and is stored there until you need that behaviour. Then it allows you to do these things without too much effort.

For example, when you learn to drive, there is a lot to remember and it is quite hard work. After a while when you have practiced driving you may find that, particularly if you do the same journey regularly, that you can drive for a period of time without noticing and that you haven’t run a red light or knocked anyone down. That is a hypnotic state.

Can anyone be hypnotised?
It is estimated that about 85% of people in all age groups will readily respond to clinical Hypnotherapy

Reassure me
Hypnotherapy is safe and effective. There are no unpleasant side effects. In fact quite the opposite. You will learn self hypnosis and how to relax. You will take this knowledge away with you which you can then use whenever and where ever you need it.

What can be treated with hypnotherapy?

There are many conditions that can be dealt with by hypnotherapy. Some like stopping smoking can be done in just one session.

In fact hypnosis has been scientifically proven to be the most successful method of stopping smoking. The NHS also recognises this fact.

Hypnotherapy can

What actually happens in a therapy session?
If you were to see Sheila for a one-to-one hypnotherapy session, she would start by taking some details to find out…
  • If hypnotherapy will fit in with any other treatment you are having
  • what you want to change in your live
  • what you want to achieve

She will help you to achieve a pleasant state of relaxation. This cannot be done against your will and you can still reject any suggestions if they are not appropriate. It’s not stage hypnosis and you CANNOT be hypnotised against your will.

It is in this state of deep relaxation that the issue can be sorted out when the subconscious mind is open to beneficial suggestions.

Will I lose control?
No. You will be in control at all times. You will be aware of your surroundings, but unless anything needs your immediate attention, you will chose not to respond E.g. when you are engrossed in a television programme or a good book, you really focus on it to the extent that you can lose yourself in the world that has been created so that if someone talks to you it will take you a few moments to come back to reality.

It is the same state as when you are just falling asleep. If someone comes into the room and asks if you are awake you will hear them but often you will be so relaxed that you choose not to answer.

So if you feel you have any issues which might affect your pregnancy or the birth, now is the time to sort them out.
